On World Communications Day, we pray for all the oppressed who do not have the freedom to communicate openly in their culture and society.
Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray that we may show understanding and patience towards those who struggle to communicate through language difficulties or the inability to speak.
Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray for journalists and communication professionals across the Australian media industry, that the Holy Spirit may guide them in their work.
Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer.

In our world today, we pray that the media will carry out its responsibility to inform society with respect, impartiality and objectivity.
Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer.

On World Communications Day, we pray for our political leaders and educators across Australia that they may communicate with respect, knowledge and tolerance for the common good.
Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer.

In this Year of Mercy, we pray for gift of giving and receiving mercy through our communication with those we encounter.
Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer.

Homily notes

You might consider reflecting on the theme, ‘Communication and Mercy’, of the 50th World Communications Day during the homily on Sunday 8 May 2016.

Some of the key points that Pope Francis makes in his message for the 50th World Communications Day include:

  • Communication can enable encounter and inclusion, thus enriching society
  • Words can build bridges between individuals and within families, social groups and people
  • Listening is never easy, knowing how to listen is an immense grace
  • Emails, text messages and social networks can also be fully human forms of communication
  • Access to digital networks entails a responsibility for our neighbour whom we do not see but who is nonetheless real and has a dignity which must be respected
  • Communication, wherever and however it takes place, has opened up broader horizons for many people
