Synodal Church

Synodal ChurchWelcome to the first LPM News in 2018. We have entered into the sacred week of the church year knowing our personal need to be transformed by the paschal mystery of Jesus. This is not however just a personal journey, it is a communal journey that we consciously undertake for the life of the world. As we know, the church is always in need of transformation. Pope Francis has called us to become a synodal Church, a listening Church. In his address to the Bishops of the world, he explains the importance of listening, dialogue and prayer.

“A synodal Church is a Church which listens, which realises that listening is more than simply hearing. It is a mutual listening in which everyone has something to learn. The faithful people, the college of bishops, the Bishop of Rome: all listening to each other, and all listening to the Holy Spirit, the ‘Spirit of truth’ (Jn 14:17), in order to know what he ‘says to the Churches’ (Rev 2:7).”

The Australian Catholic bishops have recently announced Plenary Council 2020. We are all invited to engage in this three year process that leads to the Plenary Council and beyond. To begin your engagement explore the newly launched website,

As a way of getting into the ‘synodal mode’, Proclaim 2018,  offers an opportunity to gather with Catholics from across Australia and New Zealand. This conference is being held in Brisbane, July 12th – 14th, come along to be inspired by the gathering and to enjoy the warmth of the Brisbane sun!

Faithful Stewards of God’s Grace, the national resource for lay pastoral ministry is nearing completion. The ACCLPM believes this will, among other things, add much to the conversation about ministry in Australia, both lay and ordained, as we journey to the Plenary Council. There is an update on the resource in this LPM News.

The ACCLPM is delighted to welcome new members to the council, Cathy Jenkins from the Archdiocese of Melbourne and Rachelle Smith from the Archdiocese of Hobart.

Easter blessings to you all!
